There is a saying that a happy person is a wise person. One aspect of being happy is being optimistic about others and about life in general. People who are optimistic tend to be positive and thus have more satisfying relationships with others. Scientists are studying the effects of being optimistic, and this page gives links to some of their research.
Encouraging young people at high-risk of criminal offending and
delinquency to see happiness rather than anger in facial expressions
results in a decrease in their levels of anger and aggression, according
to a new study published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.
"We tested implicit assumptions that individuals with certain
personality dispositions have different metabolic and energetic
profiles," Terracciano said. "For example, do those who are assertive
and bold expend more energy? Do those who are depressed or emotionally
vulnerable have a lower aerobic capacity and less energy? And do
conscientious individuals with an active and healthy lifestyle have more
energy?"
